A Bushey school has submitted "more appropriate" plans after its previous expansion application was rejected by the council.

Bushey Meads School in Coldharbour Lane was asked by Hertfordshire County Council to expand to help address the shortfall in school places in the area.

However, it's first application, which was heavily opposed by residents, was rejected by Hertsmere Borough Council on the grounds that the bulk, height and size of the sixth form building was not in keeping with the character of the surrounding area.

The school has now submitted a new application, which will be a phased approach to expanding.

The proposals now include a single storey extension to the dining hall and the science block as well as an additional 63 car parking spaces.

The sixth-form centre, will be refurbished and a new entrance built.

Head teacher, Jeremy Turner said the school are also planning to build an atrium - an open classroom for their "flagship" arts faculty, alongside expanding the English faculty and improving the sports facility.

He added: "We have been working with the residents to come up with a plan that is more appropriate and suits everyone. We had a meeting with everyone and showed them around the site and told about our phased approach to expanding and they seemed much happier about it."

Mr Turner, who took on the role of head teacher at the school in September 2014, said when completed the expansion will accommodate at at least another 150 students.

Katie Smith, of Coldharbour Lane, headed the campaign against the previous application. She said: "Before they planned to cut down the trees and build a two-storey building that would be at the front and change the street.

"The new phased approach don't include any big buildings that are at the front of school and don't change the street scene and I think everyone feels much happier about it.

"However, some are still concerned about the extra traffic this will cause - particularly when they have all the extra pupils coming in and out."
