A family involved with the 9th North Watford Scouts has competed in the Olympic distance London Triathlon to raise money for the group.

Brothers Chris and Steve Hawes and their dad Jonathan each completed a leg of the race on Saturday, August 8.

Group chairman of the scout group, Jonathan, 62, took on the 1.5km swim of the triathlon, while Steve, 32, a former beaver, cub and scout with the 9th, did the 40km bike ride and assistant scout leader Chris, 30, finished the challenge with the 10km run.

The Hawes family put themselves through the ordeal on one of the hottest days of the year to raise money for the scout group.

Despite the heat on the day, they completed the course in a time of 03:02:34, and were 227 in the team Olympic results out of more than 400 teams.

Becky Ellis, group scout leader at the 9th North Watford, said: “Scouting is a charity, and great scouting requires sufficient funds – to run camps, purchase equipment, provide badges and so on – in particular, with our HQ needing maintenance.

"Jonathan, Steve and Chris ran a fantastic race and all of us at the 9th are proud of them, and will put the money they raised to good use in the group and local community.”
