Staff from a Watford based NHS organisation are taking on the challenge of a lifetime to help commemorate one hundred years since the execution of a nurse in World War One.

Andrew Flynn, Lexi Ireland and Fraser Roche will also be raising money for Cavell Nurses’ Trust, named after executed Edith Cavell, which looks after today's nurses in crisis when they take on the Mount Edith Cavell challenge in Jasper National Park in Canada this week.

The challenge, which is part of the on-going centenary commemorations of Edith Cavell’s execution, will involve white water rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, mountaineering and kayaking.

Mr Roche, who works Mr Flynn and Ms Ireland at NHS Professionals, said: "When the opportunity arose to help raise awareness for Cavell Nurses’ Trust I jumped at the chance to give something back to nurses. We’ve already raised £1,897 and I can’t wait to get started, although I expect it to be really challenging."

Cavell Nurses’ Trust was set up in 1917 following the public outcry that followed the death of Edith Cavell. Today it supports more than 1,000 nurses, health care assistants and midwives each year during difficult times and aims to double the amount of nurses they support.

Jon Penhale, operations director at Cavell Nurses’ Trust, said: "We’re really excited to be holding our first international challenge and at such a fitting location.

"There’s no doubting it will be tough but that’s what these challenges are all about. We want to recognise the bravery of Edith Cavell but more importantly we want to raise vital funds to help today’s nurses, healthcare assistants and midwives who are facing difficult times."
