A Watford community centre has been given a makeover after more than 70 volunteers spent two days transforming its outdoor spaces.

Hedges that border the Meriden Community Centre were cut by apprentices at Freedom Communications in Watford, who spent one of the days volunteering alongside staff from AFC Tree care and the Green Gym.

More than 70 volunteers from Wickes head office joined the next day and supplied equipment and products for the work.

Wickes' efforts included painting several areas including the perimeter fencing around the playground, installing new picnic benches and re-landscaping several areas surrounding the centre.

Rob Smith, community director at Watford FC’s Community Sports and Education Trust, which took over the running of the centre in November 2012 from Watford Borough Council, said it has long been in need of investment.

He said: “It’s been fantastic to see the commitment from the team at Wickes. The energy and enthusiasm shown by the Wickes staff was amazing, even when the weather turned against us.

"The project was managed by them very professionally from start to finish and we are extremely grateful to Wickes for their contribution to this worthwhile community project.

"The role of local businesses is paramount to supporting local charities. Wickes are a shining example of what can be achieved when a business believes in making a contribution and difference in its local community, we hope many others follow their lead."
