Residents near Vicarage Road say they've endured two months of night time drilling, hammering and loud machinery while stadium improvement works continue.

Watford Borough Council confirmed a number of noise complaints have been logged related to the work to install 700 new seats at the front of the newly built Sir Elton John Stand in addition to redeveloping the North East corner.

One resident said the situation was "outrageous" and the people of Vicarage Road have been forced to live in "discomfort, alarm and distress".

He said: "We are outraged by the noise pollution coming from Watford football stadium.

"For the past two months during night time hours there has been drilling, hammering and loud machinery operating which is effecting the life of residents. "Numerous complains have been made by residents to both HSE and Watford council with a negative outcome.

"The contractors are rude to residents when challenged about the noise they reply 'I don't care'.

"What is Watford football directors going to do if anything to compensate residents who are paying in excess of £600 to live here and for the past two months in discomfort, alarm and distress.

"Many of the residents are professionals such as doctors, police and nurses who are effected by the lack of sleep caused by the works at the stadium."

The council has received four complaints during the course of the works, with the last on Saturday.

Most of the work was due to be completed before Saturday's match against West Bromwich Albion.

Watford FC had to make several mandatory enhancements to the stadium in order to comply with the Premier League’s requirements.

400 seats are yet to be installed in the North East corner of the grounds and a larger Hornets shop put in.

The pitch size has been increased, LED boards have been installed around the three TV-facing sides of the pitch perimeter, a press room and a room for players’ families is being built behind the Sir Elton John Stand and a TV studio is being constructed on the end of the Graham Taylor Stand.

Cllr Peter Taylor, portfolio holder for community and customer services at Watford Borough Council, said the club were to address the complaints with their contractors.

He said: “We have had four complaints regarding noise about these works.

"We have spoken to the club and understand that they have addressed this with their contractors. We all know how annoying noise can be especially late at night so we are pleased that the club resolved this quickly."

The club declined to comment when approached by the Watford Observer.
