The animal rescue centre in Watford has launched a new programme designed to train animals’ to live in a homely environment.

The National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT), based in Tylers Way, are training rescue dogs under a new behavioural conditioning programme called Open Paws.

The aim of the course is to provide the dogs with a learning stimulus to train and develop social skills they will need to make them more suitable for rehoming and allow them to effectively settle in.

Jackie De Friez, NAWT centre manager, said: “Since we started Open Paws the change in some of the dogs is incredible and it is really encouraging.

“These are rescue dogs and some of them have been through a lot when they get here so can be very anxious. We had one dog who didn’t like men at all.

“The programme helps eliminate those sorts of anxieties and provides both mental and physical stimulation. We even have them toilet trained, so they only go in the toilet area.”

To celebrate and showcase the results of Open Paws, NAWT are holding an open day on August 31 between 11am and 3pm.

Alongside the dog show, there will be range of activities including games, stalls and tombola for families to enjoy.
