Two people are seriously injured in hospital after a crash between a lorry and two cars on the M1 at Watford.

A woman in her 20s suffered serious head injuries and an injury to her ankle in the crash shortly before 9.30am this morning.

A man in his 50s also sustained head injuries and an injury to his abdomen.

Both patients were taken to St Mary’s Hospital in London.

Three ambulances, an ambulance officer and a critical care paramedic from the Herts Air Ambulance treated casualties at the scene.

Another casualty who suffered minor injuries was taken to Watford General Hospital.

Police are awaiting recovery of the vehicles. The lorry was flipped on its side during the crash, while a white Nissan juke was overturned. A blue Toyota aygo was also involved.

The M1 northbound between junction 5 and junction 6 remains closed, with diversions in place via the A41 and A405. It is likely to remain closed for at least another hour.
