Police found drivers driving up to 66mph on 40mph road in Watford.

Officers from the Watford North Safer Neighbourhood Team, Special Constabulary and Roads Policing Unit carried out a series of operations on the A405 in North Watford to tackle speeding drivers.

The operation follows concerns raised by residents about speeding on the stretch of the A405 by the Woodside Leisure Park, which has a 40mph limit.

During July and August, officers took to the road with speed guns to monitor the speed at which motorists drive.

The highest recorded speed was 66mph and 13 drivers were found to be speeding and were issued with a traffic offence report, which can result in a £100 fine and three points, depending on the speed they were travelling.

PC Steve Tull said: "A number of drivers who were stopped were residents, and the majority stated they believed the road was a 50mph limit.

"We would remind people that the speed limit on that stretch of the A405 is 40mph.

“Speed enforcement on this stretch of road is one of our local priorities. Our work to tackle the issue will continue over the coming months in an attempt to prevent speeding.

“It is particularly important here because there are schools in the vicinity and the speeding puts children in great danger. I’d urge people to be mindful of their speeds and drive within the 40mph limit."
