Schools in Hertfordshire have the opportunity to take part in a free collection service this month to recycle waste electrical and equipment.

The collection will take place in the week commencing September 21, 2015 at schools wishing to participate.

Following the success of the April 2014 collection, which saw 143 schools collect 36.38 tonnes of material for recycling, the highest amount to date, pupils and parents are also being offered the chance to bring in waste electrical items from home.

Any large items must be included on the school’s registration form, but household electrical items small enough to fit in a carrier bag can be delivered on the arranged collection date without pre-registration.

Richard Thake, responsible for waste management at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “This type of collection offers a simple and efficient way for schools to recycle old electrical items, after which the recovered materials are made into new products.

“It diverts waste from landfill and makes use of old items that would have otherwise been thrown away.

“The types of items that will be collected include mobile phones, computers, monitors, laptops, projectors, printers, batter-operated toys, televisions and radios.”

Schools that wish to register for a collection need to complete an electronic registration form at www.wasteaware.org.uk/electricals by midday on Monday, September 2015, listing the items for collection.
