A well-known businessman died after an accident while he was on holiday in Greece.

Managing director of Connor Construction Roy McGinty, 59, of Evans Avenue, fell from a wall after a night out with friends and hit his head, an inquest heard.

The accident happened on June 25 on the Greek Island of Mykonos, where Mr McGinty was holidaying on his own for the week.

The businessman was found the next day lying unconscious on rocks near the beach.

He was airlifted to hospital in Athens, where he died after a week in a coma.

Hertfordshire’s assistant coroner Alison Grief said the post-mortem examination conducted when Mr McGinty’s body was flown back to Britain revealed that he died of head injuries sustained after a fall.

She said there were no toxicology reports from the Greek authorities so it was impossible to ascertain how much he had to drink.

On Wednesday, Hertfordshire Coroner Court was told Mr McGinty had arrived on the Greek Island on June 23.

Two days into his trip, he went out for dinner with friends he had met on a previous holiday.

He was last seen between 10.30pm and 11pm, when he told a friend in the hotel he was going for a drink.

The following morning, after missing breakfast, concerned friends stated looking for him, and found him at the beach at around 7am.

Mr McGinty’s nephew told the court there was no evidence of crime, and no jewellery or money had been taken from Mr McGinty.

He said there was a wall with rocks behind it, and it was likely Mr McGinty fell from there.

There were no witnesses, so Ms Grief said her best guess was the Mr McGinty hit his head after the fall.

She recorded a verdict of accidental death.
