Two big-hearted postmen take off this week to make a special delivery to a country in crisis.

Diana Moore and Abdul Khalifah, based at the Royal Mail depot in Caxton Way, Watford, are joining a convoy delivering aid to Moldova on behalf the Communication Workers Union.

The convoy departed on Thursday with lorry loads of clothes, toiletries, food and other items donated by people and businesses in the town. The volunteers plan to transform a run-down school in Moldova into an activity centre for children with disabilities.

The facility will provide medical assistance, but also provide a safe area where children with disabilities will be able to learn as they play.

A delighted Mr Khalifah said: “We are over the moon to be setting off. We’ve got everything on board. We’ve raised about £2,850 in total. Thank you to all the companies and businesses who donated and the generosity of the public who came to the depot with donations.”

Royal Mail staff also raised money for the mercy mission, with cake sales at the Watford depot raising £100 and cake sales at the depot in Hemel Hempstead raising £500 to help.
