Developers said no to reducing the number of houses to be built on a former equestrian site in Bushey despite traffic concerns.

Last week, a second public consultation was held regarding the proposed development on the Bucks Meadow Riding School site in Bucks Avenue.

Developers, Clovercourt Fusion, are proposing to build 34 houses - 12 of which would be affordable housing.

The riding school site, which boarders Oxhey Village, is comprised of 11 hectares of Green Belt land, which the developers say they will open to the public and provide a link to the Merry Hill circular walk.

Kim Baxter, of Sherwoods Road, which is next to the development, said: "We wanted a second consultation where we could put questions to the developers about our concerns.

"The traffic and congestion is horrendous as it is - people cut through Sherwoods Road and Bucks Avenue to try and avoid the traffic on Pinner Road during rush hour and this development is only going to add to this."

Ms Baxtor added that residents at the meeting also raised concerns about the design of building and the access to the site.

She added: "Hertsmere Borough Council refused an application in 1986, because they regarded the access to the site as dangerous then - how can it then be okay nearly 30 years later when there are even more cars on the road.

"We are not against having houses built on that land - all we want is something that is not dangerous and in keeping with the surrounding area."

Stephen Giles-Medhurst, county councillor for central Watford and Oxhey, said: "I fully support the residents with regards to the additional traffic and congestion this development will cause to the surrounding area.

"Although the development is in Hertsmere and will go through them, it is the Watford and Oxhey residents that it will affect the most.

"The access to site, which is on a bend. I know highways have also raised concerns about this and have asked the developers to consider this and amend the plans before they are submitted."

Iain Taylor, head of planning at Clovercourt said: "On the matter of ‘traffic generation’ attributable to the proposal, as Herts County Council Highways department have reiterated that they do not consider a scheme of 34 dwellings will result in an unacceptable increase in road congestion and/or a reduction in road safety, there is no necessity to reduce the number of dwellings proposed."
