A Watford resident has heaped praise on a scheme set up by police to reduce crime.

Hertfordshire Constabulary launched the Safer Streets campaign in Watford and officers say they have visited more than 14,000 homes in Watford.

Police, representatives from the fire service, Watford Community Housing Trust and councillors all visited Gammons Lane on Sunday, September 13 to talk to families about issues in the road.

One resident, Urja Persad, said: “The visit was extremely useful. It was nice to be given the opportunity to discuss my concerns about crime and safety in my area one to one with the officers.

“The Safer Streets scheme is a great way to get the neighbourhood involved in looking out for each other’s safety. I will also be more vigilant about what’s going on in my area and report any concerns. I hope more residents will show an interest in the scheme to help make an even safer neighbourhood.”

Since the scheme launched in September 2013, 3275 residents have signed up to Neighbourhood Watch, 1599 have requested a follow-up visit from the fire service and 476 residents have been identified as vulnerable and are being offered more support.

Chief Inspector for Watford, Dave Wheatley said: “By knocking directly on residents’ doors my teams are also able to identify people who may be more vulnerable to crime and need extra help and support, be it additional security measures, or a regular knock at the door from their local PCSO. Through this approach we have been able to identify over 470 people who are now receiving the help they need.

“Together with our partners in the Safer Watford Community Safety Partnership we are working together to make Watford even safer.”
