Families with a disabled child under 19 enjoyed time together and fun in the sun at a picnic organised by a carers charity.

Nearly 60 people, from Watford and south west Hertfordshire, attended the Carers in Hertfordshire Family Picnic at Aldenham Country Park, on Sunday.

Grandparents, mums, dads and their children welcomed the chance to talk to others in a similar situation to them and a picnic tea of sandwiches, pizza, fruit and cakes.

While the youngsters also enjoyed games, outdoor adventure play equipment including swings, a sandpit and indoor sensory soft play areas.

Emma, who went with her three children, said: “The picnic was a lovely idea as it’s really important to have time together as a family.”

Maria Kiely, a Carers in Hertfordshire parent carer worker, said: “Caring for a child with a disability or other condition, can cause stress on relationships, financial pressures, and social and emotional isolation for the parent or carer and any other children they have.

"We recognise how important it is for families do things together as it can benefit their health and wellbeing and have a positive impact on the child receiving extra care.

“It was great to welcome so many families to our picnic. We will be looking at opportunities to hold similar events next year.”
