Landlords will be able to get free smoke alarms for their properties ahead of a change in the law.

From October 1, anyone renting out a property will have to make sure that there is at least one working smoke alarm on every floor and a carbon monoxide detector in properties where solid fuel is burned.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Services are offering a limited number of free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to private landlords, who can collect their alarms from one of the listed fire stations, including Watford, after registering online.

Richard Thake, cabinet member for community safety at the county council, said: "People without a smoke alarm are four times more likely to die in a fire, so these new regulations will make a real difference to the safety of people who are renting properties.

"We want to make it as easy as possible for landlords to comply with the new rules, which is why we're highlighting them well in advance.

"I'd encourage landlords to get ahead of the game and register for the free alarms straight away."
