Families are being invited to get to the core of sustainability by taking part in Abbots Applefest.

The event has been set up by a new partnership between Abbots in Transition, Abbots Langley Biz and Sunnyside Rural trust to celebrate Hertfordshire’s apple heritage and apple picking season.

Alongside the promise of lots of apple related games and food, there will be music, competitions, a barbecue, stalls and a chance for people to press their own apple juice.

A focal point of the day will be heritage fruit trees for sale.

People will be encouraged to plant them in front gardens and mark their location on a village map.

Community groups will also be offered the opportunity to purchase other types of trees.

Member of Abbots in Transition Anne Richardson said: “the trees are available at low cost and will be provided with help and advice on planting.

“Our long term aim is that this will enable our village on one hand to be more able to feed itself from local sources and on the other, for children to see apples growing, eat freshly picked and not just from a supermarket plastic bag.

“We believe in the log-run this will mean better health for people and for our wildlife.”

Abbots Applefest will be held on October 18 in School Mead, Abbots Langley.
