There has been a second morning of chaos for commuters in Watford, with one motorist labelling traffic troubles "maybe the worst ever".

Routes from Vicarage Road were gridlocked in the morning rush hour yesterday and today as a trial for a new one-way system begun.

Hertfordshire County Council has introduced the trial between Rose Gardens and Stripling Way for four months.

Disgruntled commuters criticised the carnage on the roads, with one calling for an overhaul to avoid a "disaster" for Watford.

Jennifer Philips drives from Harrow to Watford once a week to babysit her granddaughter. Her journey today was extended by 40 minutes.

She said: “I have never seen anything like it.

“It is a good job I don’t have to come here every day, it was carnage.

“I saw traffic wardens ticketing parents, who were just dropping of their children and had nowhere else to go.

“This ridiculous system is affecting traffic as far back as South Oxhey. The trial cannot be implemented permanently.”

A spokesperson at Watford Borough Council said no tickets were issued to parents.

A final decision on whether to introduce the scheme will be made in February 2016.
