The countdown to Christmas in Watford began tonight as the town’s lights were switched on.

Hundreds of families filled the intu shopping centre to watch this year’s local hero Brooke Cornwell flick the switch, with a spectacular firework finale adding to the sparkle.

Brooke was joined by players from Watford FC (pictured below) - including captain Troy Deeney, Ikechi Anya, Miguel Britos and Alex Jakubiak.

There were also appearances from Santa, the Pump House Theatre and the Pauline Quirke Academy.

Everyone got in the Christmas spirit as they joined in with Watford's Rock Chorus Choir (below) to sing carols.

Brooke is one of only 125 people across the UK born with Diamond Blackfan Anaemia, a disorder which means her bone marrow cannot produce enough red blood cells to carry oxygen around her body.

The brave ten-year-old was crowned Watford’s Local Hero 2015 after being nominated by a family friend.

Speaking before the switch-on, the plucky youngster said: “I am so excited to be here. Christmas is my favourite time of year and it has been so fun getting into the Christmas spirit.”

Also at the event were the other four finalists in this year’s Local Hero competition, including 10-year-old Tyler Witherley.

He said: “I was so surprised to be nominated but this has been so fun.”

His mum Kerry said: “I nominated Tyler because he is a superstar.

“I have a chronic illness and he does so much to help.

"He cares not only for me but also his sisters, and I don’t think he realises how amazing and special he is.”

Ticker-tape fell over the crowd following the switch-on and Christmas music filled the air before Brooke officially opened Santa’s grotto.

Fireworks followed the light switch-on.

Watford FC captain Troy Deeney said the players received a warm welcome when they took to the bridge and said it was good to see so many fans.

He added: “It is great to be able to connect with the fans.

“It was also special meeting Brooke. It's also great being able to share this with my family.”

Families also enjoyed face-painting, stilt-walking elfs and an appearance from last year’s winner Rio Woolf, who said he was excited for the switch-on.
