Bombing raids in Syria is the only way to begin combatting a “medieval and barbaric” regime according to Watford MP Richard Harrington, who says he will vote in favour of the Prime Minister’s plans.

A one-day Commons debate and vote is set to take place in Parliament tomorrow, which will see MPs decide whether the UK begins a campaign of air strikes against so-called Islamic State (IS) in Syria.

Mr Harrington has said he will join David Cameron and other Conservative MPs in voting for the strikes.

The newly-appointed Minister for Syrian Refugees said: "The main purpose of our government is to keep its people safe.

"The threat of IS is here now and in the last 12 months, our police and security services have disrupted no fewer than seven terrorist plots to attack the UK, every one of which was either linked to or inspired by IS.

"We cannot outsource our own security to our allies, or hide our head in the sand and pretend that we aren’t already at war – because IS is certainly at war with us."

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn strongly opposes the plans, but has granted his MPs a free vote on the matter after many of his senior level politicians said they could side with the Prime Minister.

Mr Cameron may have to convince a number of his own backbenchers to gain the majority he needs, after a Tory revolt prevented air strikes in Syria back in 2013.

Mr Harrington added: "Our allies are already working to target IS in Syria but they have made it clear that we are needed.

"The RAF can carry out dynamic targeting, which uses weapons like the Brimstone Precision Missile to target our enemies and avoid civilians as far as is possible, whilst supporting local forces on the ground.

"Our military intervention – airstrikes in Syria – is just one part of the overall strategy.

"The first is the counter extremism strategy we have at home, to deal with home grown threats.

"Then there is huge support for a political process towards peace, which will include Iran, Saudi Arabia and other regional powers.

"The final pillar is the humanitarian aid we are providing for those affected by IS.

"The scale of the help we have given is huge, the Government has committed over £1 billion in humanitarian funding providing support such as food, shelter and medical care and clean drinking water for hundreds of thousands of people affected by the conflict both inside Syria and for refugees across the region, in addition to our Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme which aims to give safe harbour 20,000 Syrian refugees to the UK.

"I am proud of what we have achieved, but we have to confront these problems at source."

This vote follows multiple terrorist attacks through November where hundreds of people died in Paris, Beirut, Lebanon, Kenya and Nigeria.

Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden said he would also be voting in support of action in Syria.

The Observer contacted the other MPs in Hertfordshire for their decision but had not received a response at the time of print.
