Hertsmere MP Oliver Dowden has called for Bushey station to be rezoned to reduce ticket prices.

During peak hours the price of a daily return ticket to London Euston from Bushey, which is in zone eight, is £16.80.

From Hatch End, which is only two stops away in zone six, the price of the same ticket is £12 and from Harrow and Wealdstone in zone five, this is £11.60.

According to Mr Dowden, many residents believe that Bushey should be reassigned as a zone six station and he has already written to the managing director of TfL and the Mayor of London.

He said: "It is clearly ridiculous that many Bushey residents who commute into London do not feel that they can afford to do so from their own local train station. This needs to be addressed.

"The price disparity between a season ticket into London from Harrow or Hatch End compared to Bushey is very significant.

"I have heard from many Bushey residents who feel they have no choice but to commute into London from another nearby station.

"This adds needless inconvenience to the daily routine of many of my constituents when they should be able to travel from their own local train station."

Sam Arnold, of Upper Paddock Road, commutes from Bushey station every day.

The 19-year-old said: "The biggest thing is the jump in price. Only two stops away and you save almost a third, which is ridiculous.

"While rezoning it will definitely reduce the price, they should also look at the pricing for zones that further out."

Another resident, Vikram Aggarwal, has used Bushey station to commute for the last four years.

My Aggarwal, 35, of Wellsfield, said: "It's not just the prices that need to be addressed. Over the last few years the number of people commuting from the station has increased drastically, but the frequency of the trains and sometimes even the length of the train has not.

"Everyone says there is a housing crisis so there are housing developments going on everywhere, but the infrastructure does not match this.

"We have considered moving because commuting from Bushey station can be a nightmare."

A Department for Transport spokesperson said: "Proposals for rezoning rail stations can only be made by either TfL or a train operating company, and would need to demonstrate value for money for both passengers and taxpayers.

"There are no outstanding requests from TfL or train operators for Bushey station to be rezoned."
