A charity that uses design and engineering to transform the lives of people with disabilities has secured a cash boost.

DEMAND, based in Mallard Road in Abbots Langley, was selected as one of Persimmon Homes North London’s Community Champions, a scheme that awards £1,000 to further the charity’s work within the community.

The project sees a pot of £24,000 donated to nearby groups and charities.

The charity, which stands for Design and Manufacture for Disability, works with some of the most vulnerable and socially isolated people in society, striving to address the needs of severely disables children and adults.

Denise Gillies, fundraising manager at DEMAND, said: “We are so thankful to Persimmon Homes North London for this generous donation, one that will greatly help with the work we do at our charity.

“DEMAND creates bespoke technical solutions to everyday living challenges that are encountered by the people we work with.

“Our clients range in age from pre-school babies and toddlers to retirement age and beyond. Their difficulties also span the full disability spectrum, with the majority struggling to cope with debilitating conditions such as arthritis, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis.”

DEMAND has organised a number of fundraising initiatives this year to help raise its much-needed funds, including a fundraising gala which showcased five short films of projects they wanted to support and, its latest one, a Thanksgiving gourmet dinner at West Herts College.

Greg Kaye, head of sales at Persimmon Homes North London, said the company is delighted to be helping out many disadvantaged people in the Hertfordshire area.

He said: “Persimmon Homes North London has had a fantastic response to its Community Champions scheme and it is always a tricky task to pick our winners each month.

“If applicants were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again and hopefully they will become our next Community Champion.”
