The final designs for the United Synagogue Burial Site at Bushey Cemetery in Little Bushey Lane have been released.

London-based architecture studio Waugh Thistleton have recently started development on the site and the plans include two service buildings created with a timber structure.

The landscape around the building will be designed as an ecological response to the site’s green belt location and the Cemetery will be created from an ancient and sustainable building technique called rammed earth.

Peter Zinkin, chairman of the United Synagogue property committee, said: “We are excited about this development which promises to deliver us a modern cemetery which should be aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly.”

The development for the cemetery received planning approval from Hertsmere Borough Council in 2013 and completion is scheduled for 2017.

Andrew Waugh, director at Waugh Thistleton, said: “This is a very special building and we believe the rammed earth technique we are using enhances the spiritual nature of the religious building, as the materials are biodegradable, and will one day return to the earth from which they came.”

Bushey Cemetery will be created in collaboration with engineers Elliot Wood and plans were designed by landscape architects J and L Gibbons which includes swales, weirs and ponds.
