More than 700 people signed a petition over 24 hours to save two Watford bus routes.

Services 142, Watford Junction to Brent Cross, and 258, Watford Junction to South Harrow, are under threat if Hertfordshire County Council cuts its funding for the routes as planned in its proposed budget for 2016.

The route was used by 2060340 passengers during the 2014/15 financial year.

Currently, the authority shares funding of the services with Transport for London (TFL).

So far nearly 1,000 people have signed the paper petition on the Watford Labour Party website.

Susan Gaszczak said: "The 142 and 258 buses are never empty - my 12-year-old daughter uses it every day to get to Bushey Academy.

"Anyone seeing these buses at 3pm in the town centre coming from Bushey will be know how many arrive, one after the other, with masses of black and pink uniforms filing into the street."

The 43-year-old added: "It is not just a peak times that you see this bus full - or see people queueing for buses that are an integral part of our community.

"It would be a disaster to lose this service."

The county council said it was coming to the end of a three year funding arrangement with TfL.

No decision to extend this support package has been made and a final decision on whether to do so or whether to stop this funding will be informed from what the council hear from TfL.

Nigel Bell, Watford Labour Group Leader, said: "I have been inundated with calls from people frightened by the consequences of losing these vital bus services.

"We are determined to campaign to save these routes from closure."
