Thousands of passengers have signed a petition to save bus services, fearing that cutting it would leave elderly people stranded and students with no way to get to school.

Services 142, Watford Junction to Brent Cross, and 258, Watford Junction to South Harrow, are under threat if Hertfordshire County Council cuts its funding for the routes as planned in its proposed budget for 2016.

Currently, the authority shares funding of the services with Transport for London (TFL).

The county council said it was coming to the end of a three year funding arrangement with TfL in March.

No decision to extend this support package has been made and a final decision on whether to do so or whether to stop this funding will be informed from what the council hear from TfL.

So far nearly 2,000 people have signed the paper petition on the Watford Labour Party website.

In a letter to Boris Johnson, they asked Boris Johnson to put pressure on his Conservative colleagues at County Hall to continue their subsidy.

They wrote: "This threat is causing significant anxiety to bus users and the public generally in the Watford area."

Central Ward Labour councillor Mike Haley said: "Hertfordshire’s Conservatives are recklessly cutting services regardless of the consequence.

"Unless TFL foot the bill for services outside their area, these bus routes will be lost or stop at the London boundary.

"That would have a detrimental effect on thousands of local peoples’ lives and would hit Watford’s economy hard.

"The response to this petition has been huge reflecting the wide public anger that these critical services are under threat. We call on the County to guarantee these bus services."
