TONY POOLE became Watford Borough Council's new chairman on Wednesday evening in a ceremony steeped in tradition.

Unanimously elected by his fellow councillors, Councillor Poole was dressed in the official red, gold and black robes of office and given the official chain of office on the steps inside the main entrance to the Town Hall.

Managing director of Watford Borough Council Alastair Robertson then presented the Chairman with the Mace of the Borough, which is symbolic of the authority vested in the office.

Taking over the role from Rabi Martins, councillor Poole, described as a stickler for grammar and a keen saxophonist by his proposer Ian Sharpe, said that his year in office will be categorised by celebrating the visual and performing arts in Watford.

"The role of Chairman still represents a celebration of the town of Watford and its people," Councillor Poole said. "It is our creativity that brings us to life and lets us enjoy more fully our humanity."

He added: "May the fortunes of Watford Borough Council go from strength to strength."
