Two women ran a 10k race in memory of three teenagers who died in a car crash.

Sally Newing, 38, lost her younger sister Lucy Cook, 16, in a car crash almost 20 years which also killed Katherine Baines, 17, and her brother Matthew, 14.

The three victims all attended Queens’ School, in Bushey, had been travelling home from a 17th birthday party when they were killed in a car crash in The Avenue, Bushey, just before midnight on Friday July 2, 1996.

Ms Newing and Tertia Rimell, 37, - the schoolfriend of two of the victims – complete the London Winter Run on January 31 despite the wet and windy weather.

Ms Rimell, of Strangeways, Watford, said: “We’re working so hard to reach our target of £3,000 but would like to reach out to businesses to donate to our worthy cause.

“We’ve got two half marathons to complete soon, Brighton on February 28 and Bath March 13.

“So far we’ve raised £2,224.12.”

The pair, who have called their fundraising challenge Running 4 Our Angels, are hoping to raise money for BRAKE – a road safety charity that supports car crash victims and their families.

On February 5, the pair held an assembly to Drake House, Queens’ School to tell them who they are and what they are doing.

Both had key messages on road safety and let listeners know how they felt at the time of the accident.

In November 2015, the pair completed the Grand Union Canal Half Marathon which goes from Uxbridge to Cassiobury Park.

Ms Newing, of Follet Drive, Abbots Langley, told the Watford Observer before the race that even 20 years after the accident it has still impacted her life.

She said: “It’s something that is extremely hard to comprehend, even 20 years later.

“I have missed seeing my sister everyday – getting married, having children, every Christmas or birthday or family meal there is always an empty chair.”

The two women are members are UcanJog2 running club in Abbots Langley where they train.

Their goal is to be able to run the London Marathon this year to mark 20 years since the accident.
