A pancake race in the centre of Rickmansworth raised more than £3,000 for Watford Mencap.

The annual event raises vital cash for the charity which supports people with learning disabilities.

Organisers say the money will help eight children to attend Watford Mencap’s after school club in Watford.

Gibbs Gillespie won the race after four heats and then a hotly contested final.

Competitors were forced to flip the pancakes halfway along the High Street.

Amanda Genshil, organiser of this year’s race, said: “I am absolutely delighted.

"This year has been fantastic for us. We had 19 teams from different businesses and groups in the community who have come together to support Watford Mencap.

“We raised more than £3,000 which could allow eight children to attend the after-school club at the Watford Mencap Children Centre for a term.

“It makes a huge difference to the lives of people who have learning disabilities as well as the event being a huge amount of fun for everyone to take part in.”

Cllr Chris Lloyd did the countdown to start the races.

Dick Morgan, who set up the event 15 years ago, said: “It is great to see the amount of money raised.

“This is the biggest it has ever been and hopefully it will keep going from strength to strength.”
