Cheltenham Towns's World of Smile Stadium brought no joy for Welling United.

Dean Frost made changes from the team that drew with Altrincham a week earlier in the hope of conjouring a much needed win. Ian Gayle returned at centre back, Nortei Nortey came into a defensive midfield position and Harry Lee moved forward in place of the injured Xavier Vidal.

Michael Bakare was picked ahead of Luke Wanadio, and Sahr Kabba came in for Ade Yusuff.

After an encouraging Welling start they were indebted to Marek Rodak for a superb save from James Rowe after he had tricked his way into a good position.

Another Rowe effort was saved brilliantly by Rodak and the assistant referees flag was up quickly before Danny Wright could follow up.

Wright was not to be denied, however, when Cheltenham split the Welling centre backs allowing Jordan Cranston to cross for Wright to head inside the far post.

Kadell Daniel shot wide of the near post for Welling before they faced more danger. Rowe took a free kick in a dangerous area but his shot was half blocked and drifted into the arms of Rodak.

Noah Chesmain had a shot blocked for a corner but a foul in the area meant that Welling could not capitalise.

Asa Hall fired well wide for Cheltenham before a good Welling move almost shocked the hosts.

Kabba held play up well before laying off to Daniel. He then invited Barney Williams forward, and the full back drove inside to find Bakare. His strike was scuffed however and Dillon Phillips got down to save.

James Dayton was allowed to cut in from a corner unopposed but Rodak was down well to save at his near post.

Dayton again tested Rodak, this time from outside the area before the goalkeeper, on loan from Fulham, pulled off another good save from Jack Barthram.

There was still hope for Welling, however, and Noah Chesmain's cross found Daniel under pressure at the far post, but he was unable to find the target with his header.

Neither side made changes at the break and the first goal attempt was a Cameron Burgess header from a Cheltenham corner that went wide.

Any hope Welling may have had of getting something out of the game were finished when Dayton crossed to the far post where Wright headed back across the face of the goal and Dan Holman was on hand to finish from barely a yard out.

Hall had a shot beaten out by Rodak but Welling didn't shy away and continued to try and find a way through.

A nasty injury to substitute Harry Pell saw him replaced by Billy Waters but curiously, despite the fact he was down for several minutes, none of his team-mates showed the slightest concern.

Although they enjoyed plenty of possession, Welling were unable to create a clear cut chance and Cheltenham tried to catch them on the break.

Holman shot wide before Waters broke clear and seemed certain to score when breaking through however, Rodak forced him wide, and Williams got back to make a brilliant defensive tackle.

Then breaking from a Welling corner, the Robins outnumbered the defence but Kyle Storer's shot was cleared off the line by Chesmain.

Yusuff had a late curler saved comfortably by Phillips but it was to no avail as Welling's long winless run in the league was extended.

Welling United: Rodak,Williams, Chesmain, Ferry, Chambers, Gayle, Daniel (Wanadio 80), Lee, Kabba, Bakare (Harris 61), Nortey (Yusuff 72). Unused substitutes: McEntegart, Wellard.
