Friends and family are "heartbroken" after the body of a "great man" was pulled from the Grand Union Canal in Croxley Green.

The body of a man named locally as Paul Harper, 46, was found in the Grand Union Canal off Hazelbank, in Croxley Green, on Tuesday morning.

Mr Harper has been described as a "true legend" and a "lovely guy" by friends and family.

Maggie Parker, who described Mr Harper as her "soulmate", said: “What can I say about Paul? Paul was with his partner Lynn for more than 14 years with their dog Tilly.

“He was an ex-soldier. He loved sailing and scuba diving. He was a great friend to many and would do anything to help a friend.

“He was a well-known and respected figure within the local and surrounding areas. A fun-loving man who frequently propped up a bar or two in his short time here.

“One of the best men I have ever known and one who will be sorely missed by many.

“All who knew him are heartbroken and in shock. What a waste of a great man and friend. We are all gutted.”

Many people expressed their condolences on social media after news of Mr Harper's death was reported.

Deborah Wilbee, who met Mr Harper four years ago, said: “He had a great amount of loss in his life and it is a small blessing that he has reunited with his loved ones.

“I was shocked when I heard the news. It wasn’t expected. It is not what you want to hear. He was a really private man and a great guy.”

Others who did not know Mr Harper also paid their respects on social media and described hearing the news as a "sickening feeling".

Mark McAtasney, a friend of Mr Harper, said: “Paul was a well-known man in my town. A work buddy and drinking buddy to myself and friends.

“I am still trying to get to grips with this tragic loss and speaking to people who were closer to him than myself.”

One of the many people who responded to the news of his death was Jade Thompson, who said there is no better place for him to be.

She said: “So sad. A true legend.

"I enjoyed the years I knew you Paul. RIP Angel.”

Police and ambulance services were called to the canal near Rickmansworth Road on Tuesday morning. Mr Harper was pronounced dead at the scene. His family and friends have been informed.

The cause of death has yet to be determined and an investigation is underway.

His body has been handed to the Coroner.
