Commuters have said farewell to the kiosk at Radlett train station as it closed its doors for the last time on February 19.

Vinu and Rekha Patel ran the kiosk for more than 20 years and after Mr Patel’s death in 2015 his family decided to continue to open it for commuters.

After nearly a year after his death, Mrs Patel decided to close the kiosk once and for all.

Her daughter said: “The kiosk was my dad’s life. He loved the community spirit and my mother wanted to carry on serving the local community after his passing.

“It’s an end of an era. We just wanted to say a great big thank you to all commuters that we have served over the time at the kiosk.”

The kiosk was opened 22 years ago on Valentine’s Day in 1994 and that is how Mr Patel used to remember the year.

In June last year, the Radlett community got together and created a plaque to remember him by and was unveiled outside the waiting room.

After announcing the closure of the kiosk, Mrs Patel has been overwhelmed with cards from the community.

One card expressed their gratitude to the owners and many others wrote about their sadness in the closure but agreed it was the right time.

The kiosk was well-loved the in area and it was because of commuters that the kiosk started to sell tea and coffee.

Mrs Patel said: “My daughters have been my backbone at the kiosk. I couldn’t have done it without them.

“I want to say thank you for all the support the community has given, and to Susan Field and Eric Ashhurst who helped us every morning in setting up the Newspapers together with Andy Harvell with the Newspaper Deliveries”
