Commuters are backing a petition calling on TFL to introduce the Oyster card system in Kings Langley.

The Oyster card gives train passengers a reduced price compared to standard tickets.

But they can only get as far as Watford Junction Station on the main line out of Euston towards Birmingham using that ticket.

Commuters say that if an option to use the Oyster card was introduced at Kings Langley Station, it would cut travel costs and be easier than buying a ticket every day.

A standard season ticket from Kings Langley to London costs £3,932. An off-peak single between Watford Junction and London Euston costs £9.80. But the same off-peak journey using the Oyster card is £4.90.

One commuter, Jo Ashford, said: “The ticket office is regularly closed and at peak times, there are long queues for both the ticket office and ticket machine.

London Midland is putting a lot of resources into fare dodging and on some occasions, being quite aggressive and unfair. Some honest commuters that do not want to get to the station half an hour before their train to buy a ticket can find themselves caught out because you can a ticket on some services, but not on others.

“Having an option to use the Oyster card will stop this being a problem as honest commuters will be able to buy a ticket easily and genuine fair dodgers will be caught.”

The Oyster card terminals at stations in London also allow people to pay a reduced rate using their contactless debit cards.

Alex Macnamara said: “It would be fabulous if it were to be introduced, it would save time in the mornings and reduce ticket avoidance.

“It could help reduce travel costs for many season ticket holders and people who are having to use the underground.”

Clive Rose says it can be frustrating getting a new ticket from London Euston, adding “it will just make things a lot easier.”

The petition, set up by the Liberal Democrat councillors in Abbots Langley, says Mayor London of London Boris Johnson believed the ticketing system could be extended to Kings Langley.

Cllr Matthew Bedford said, "Bringing the Oyster card to Kings Langley station would make travel into London cheaper and more convenient for residents, and lower the number of local residents driving into Watford Junction to use their Oyster cards there".
