School pupils who could be reporting tomorrow’s news got to interview a professional journalist today (February 24).

The Guardian’s own Joseph Flaig visited Moreton C.E. Primary School in Church Road to meet with members of the school’s newspaper group.

Starting before the half term break, the Moreton Press Club is formed of pupils in years four and five who report on school events as they learn about the news and improve their reading and writing.

Their articles are currently sent out with the head teacher’s newsletter, but the project could eventually produce a complete student paper.

Thomas, in year four, said his favourite part of the club was getting a ‘scoop’.

He said: “It is very fun, because we get to do things first and once we have done them we can do our reports with an open mind.

“Seeing how things are done, you can then write the stories in detail.

“When the newspaper is published it will be good to see if there is anything I can improve for the future.”

Mr Flaig told the pupils about his job, including how to source stories and make them as interesting as possible.

He said: “It was great to meet all the young reporters of the Moreton Press Club.

“They were all obviously keen to learn about newspapers and reporting, especially the best ways to find and write stories.

“I look forward to seeing some more of their articles and wish them luck with their journalism careers, whether it only lasts in school or if they take it further.”

The school’s finance and office manager Lynn Carpenter organised and teaches the group.

She said: “It is about independence and giving them confidence, and hopefully improving their skills.

“They clearly enjoy it, they are all quite confidently asking questions and getting involved.”
