Hornets skipper Troy Deeney says he was “a bit annoyed” to be played out of position in front of watching England boss Roy Hodgson on Saturday.

Watford’s captain has produced a number of impressive performances this season and in the past month talk of the 27-year-old earning a call-up to the Three Lions squad has intensified.

Hodgson decided to attend Watford’s match against Bournemouth at the weekend to take a closer look at the Hornets striker.

But, with the Cherries frustrating Quique Sanchez Flores’ side, Deeney was moved out wide as Watford attempted to get behind the visitors’ defence.

“I was only told he was at the game yesterday,” Deeney told talkSPORT this morning.

“We played a different formation. I kind of played in midfield so I was a bit annoyed to be honest. It was my chance to show what I can do but I was playing as a right midfielder.”

Flores explained this morning that he set up his side on Saturday in a 4-3-2-1 system with Deeney and Nordin Amrabat starting behind Ighalo.

However, at half time he opted to make a tactical switch.

Watford’s head coach said: “They decided to attack down the sides and we decided to attack behind their defensive line.

“So we wanted our three strikers to get behind their line. It looked like a 4-3-3 because Deeney, Ighalo and Amrabat expected to get the ball behind the Bournemouth defence.

“Deeney was more a striker rather than being behind Ighalo. That was part of the play.

"We understand because at half time we said: ‘Boys the space is behind the defence’. So if we wanted to get behind their defence we had to be on the line.”
