Barack Obama said that society is "moving in the right direction" on LGBT rights in response to a question from a transgender student from Watford.

The US president was accused of not taking seriously the lives of those who do not identify as either male or female.

Maria Munir, 20, from Watford, broke down in tears as they addressed the leader, saying the UK did not recognise non-binary people under the equality act, meaning they have "no rights" in the face of discrimination.

"I really, really wish that yourself and David Cameron would take us seriously as transgender people," they said.

Mr Obama, speaking to 500 youth leaders at a town hall meeting in London, said that the US was "taking a lot of serious steps" to address LGBT issues in the federal government.

He also praised Mr Cameron as "ahead of the curve" on the topic.

Ms Munir is currently a Vicarage Ward candidate for the Liberal Democrats. They were attending the event after winning a competition to meet the US president.

Obama is reported to be heading to the Grove this afternoon on the final day of his last visit to the UK as president.
