Flash floods brought Watford to a standstill last night.

Roads, pavements, underpasses and buildings were all flooded during a half hour thunderstorm at 7pm.

Traffic was brought to a halt and people were shocked by how quickly the water levels rose.

Firefighters were kept busy throughout the evening as they helped to removed stranded vehicles and pumped out flooded properties.

The deluge caused severe delays on the town’s roads including the A41 at Leavesden and St Albans Road (below).

Queues of traffic built up as rising water levels left vehicles unable to move.

Classrooms were flooded at Kingsway Infant school in Garston - where staff spent hours cleaning the damage so the school could open today.

There was standing water on many roads throughout the town, and water running down the hill at the junction of Hempstead Road and Courtlands Drive.

The railway bridge in Balmoral Road was also under water and it was still flooded yesterday.
