Cabinet member for Highways across Hertfordshire admitted the roads in Bushey are not in good condition.

At the latest Bushey Forum meeting on Tuesday May 31 Hertfordshire County Council Terry Douris addressed the residents on the state of the roads across Bushey.

During the meeting Cllr Douris told the residents Hertfordshire County Council has been given £943,000 from the government to fix the potholes. This grant will be given for the next four years.

Cllr Douris said: “I am aware the roads in Bushey are not in good condition. Bushey has a high level of traffic and there are a number of new building developments going on.

“We have to keep our roads and pavements as safe as possible. As well as keeping the people who use them safe.”

According to Cllr Douris for a micro-surfacing job it will cost around £9 per square metre but for a full resurface it costs around £35 per square metre.

Cllr Douris told the residents of Bushey the county council will make the roads safe but they cannot afford to make them ‘look beautiful’.

Cllr Douris said: “The county council has a budget of £88million each year to maintain the county's 5,000km of roads.

“£31million is used for general maintenance and £21million is used for routine maintenance including fixing potholes.

“Another £34million is use for other major projects across the county.”

Cllr Douris also revealed the county councillors will each be given £10,000 and Cllr Seamus Quilty will be using some of his money to fix Merry Hill Road, Bushey.

Cllr Quilty spoke at the meeting and told residents he is also working to fix the roads of Sparrows Herne, Bushey, but it has taken up to two years.

Other roads across Bushey were mentioned by a number of residents at the meeting including Melbourne Road.

Cllr Quilty told the meeting he has been speaking with Highways who have recommended the road has double yellow lines down one side.

He said: “I cannot say which side of the road yet. It takes at least two years to get double yellow lines down on a road.

“It is difficult but I am trying to speed up the process.”

The next Bushey Forum meeting will be held at the Bushey Centre on September 20.
