This week we spoke to Dr Marina Prentoulis, spokeswoman for Another Europe and senior lecturer at the University of East Anglia.

“I am campaigning with Another Europe but as a member of the Greek left wing party Syriza I also had the experience of the negotiations in that country last summer.

“There are many things in the EU that are not perfect this is why Another Europe is campaigning for Remain in order to change Europe.

“We, the progressive forces in Britain and Europe, we understand that not everything is perfect in the EU.

“Because, like our national parliaments, the EU institutions has been dominated by neo-liberal right wing forces serving the big financial interests rather than the people of Europe.

“These are the dominant forces colonising all the EU institutions.

“They dominate the European Parliament, the right wing national governments are the ones appointing the Commissioners, and the heads of these national right wing governments are the ones on the European Council.

“If we want to bring change, if we want to stop the assault on labour rights, if we want to stop them from putting the interests of big business and financial centres over the people of Europe, we have to stay in and change the balance of power within the EU.

“We have to create movements on the ground across Europe. We have to change the national governments supporting austerity and we have to create alliances across progressive forces within the European Union that will fight for a social Europe.

“We cannot fall back to our national borders.

“The big challenges that we face today, from the environment to tax evasion, can only be stopped if we work united, together.

“In Britain, we should not allow the assault on labour rights, we should not allow any more cuts, we should stop privatisations.

“The welfare state and our labour rights have been won by the collective struggles of the people of Europe and we can only stop them if we fight together, reclaiming what is ours.”
