A group of schoolgirls took part in an informative and lively debate on the EU.

On June 21, a group of girls from St Margaret’s School in Bushey welcomed pro-EU supporter Dirk Hazell and Stuart Agnew, UKIP MEP for the East of England.

Both sides gave their arguments for and against the upcoming referendum.

Head teacher Rose Hardy said: “We are delighted to be hosting such an informative and educational event.

“The results of the EU referendum will have a life changing impact on our pupils and it is important for them to engage with the politics of our time.”

St Margaret’s School is introducing Government and Politics as an A-Level subject from September 2016.

Mr Agnew said: “Due to a serious traffic accident on the M25, I was late for the debate and therefore missed the opening 20 minute presentation of my opponent, Dirk Hazell.

“I arrived as he finished and immediately gave my own 20 minutes.

“This was followed by questions from the students which I was assured were not planted.

“These included the issue of residential rights post-Brexit and the possible event of a re-entry to the EU in the future.

“There was no vote taken and afterwards we joined some staff and senior girls for coffee and an enjoyable chat.”

Mr Hazell said: "The EU is the best hope for Britain’s youth and the girls’ questions went to the heart of key issues."
