Thousands of voters in Watford have had their say in Britain’s historic EU Referendum vote.

After a gruelling 10-week campaign, more than 900 polling stations across Hertfordshire are open until 10pm as the country decides its future.

The historic vote is the third nationwide referendum ever to take place in the UK and the country seems to be halved over which way to vote.

David Clark, 67, of Monmouth Road, Watford, said: “I voted to come out. I did my thought for my grandchildren who are four and six.

“It will be a long time until we are back to the country we used to be before the EU.

“In 20 years’ time my grandchildren will say ‘grandad did the right thing.”

A poll on the Watford Observer website saw 61 per cent voting to leave with 39 per cent voting to stay.

Ryan Morrison, 34, said: “It will be a big turnout. I voted to remain.”

Polling stations across Hertfordshire have been quiet during the day with one voter saying she was the only one in there when she went to cast her vote.

Most voters are expected to take make their vote after they have finished work.

The first results are expected to come in at around 12.30am and the final result is expected around 7am.
