A huge clear-up operation is underway after multiple rooms in a primary school were flooded.

Many areas in south west Hertfordshire were affected by flooding after heavy rain yesterday evening.

But staff at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, in Ainsdale Road, are cleaning up the school after three classrooms, the dining room, the staff office and the staff room flooded.

The school is due to celebrate its 60th birthday on Wednesday.

Christine Cowley, the school secretary, said: “We have got the wooded-area behind us and the water was just cascading down like a waterfall.

“We are having a big clear-up and parents have been amazing. They were here until 10pm last night and they were going around mopping up the water and hoovering the carpet.

“It is devastating when something like this happens.

“We are hoping we will be reopened by Monday. But we are supposed to be celebrating our 60th birthday next week.”
