Watford MP Richard Harrington said he was “disappointed” the town voted to Leave the European Union.

The town narrowly voted to Leave by 50.3 per cent to 49.7 per cent.

Watford MP Richard Harrington said: “I was surprised by the result, as most of us were.

“I was disappointed with the Watford result.

“But I am very pleased we had the referendum and it is my duty to represent the interests of everyone, irrespective of the way they voted.

“For example, if there is a recession, which many people think there will be, it is my job to make sure Watford is looked after, and if the time comes, and there is instability over jobs or something like that, I will be there to make sure I get the best for Watford.”

Mr Harrington added: “We have seen all the arguments and I decided on balance that it wasn’t worth the risk and the electorate decided differently.”

The Tory MP also paid tribute to Prime Minister David Cameron, who announced he will be resigning.

He said: “I was very surprised and very disappointed. I’m a big supporter of his.

“He has done a fantastic job for the country.”
