However following the flash floods last Thursday the school has had to closed for a whole week after 14 classrooms flooded.

In a letter sent out to parents on Friday head teacher Della Allen said surveyors and a loss adjuster have visited the school.

Mrs Allen wrote: "They have informed us that the flood damage is substantial and the rescue operation will be therefore need to be project managed.

"At this time they are not able to tell us when the school will re-open to children.

"I ask that you are patient and know that we are doing all we can to reopen Highwood as soon as possible."

Mrs Allen said children may be able to return to the school on a staggered basis, beginning with the Year 6 children.

Bushey Manor Junior School, also in Bushey, have also closed due to flooding despite looking for alternative provisions.

As of Wednesday this week, only Year 5 children were able to return to school.

However Years 3, 4 and 6 are expected to return back to school on Tuesday July 5 at the earliest.

The school disco has been cancelled and class photographs have been extended to July 6.
