A candlelit vigil will be held to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Held by Kings Langley parish council, the service will be held tonight at 9pm in the village garden, High Street.

The Battle of the Somme lasted from July 1 to November 18, 1916. Almost 420,000 British soldiers were killed and injured.

Paul Dunham, clerk to the parish council, said: “There will be people here tonight who are tearful. There may be grandchildren of men and women who died during the war – for them, this will be an emotional night.

“Hopefully everything goes to plan because events like this are always tremendous.”

The Mayor of Dacorum, Bob McLean, will lead the service and Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning, who represents Kings Langley, will be reading the list of honours.

The service, in memory of the soldiers from the village who lost their lives, will include tributes, poems and a laying of a wreath.

There will also be a candlelit procession to the war memorial.
