A road has been blocked and closed due to a large amount of rubbish dumped.

Police were called to Summerhouse Lane, in Aldenham, on Monday at around 10.30pm after reports of fly tipping.

Officers said a fridge and safe were among the rubbish dumped. Cars were unable to pass due to the rubbish blocking the road.

Hertsmere Borough Councillor Seamus Quilty, who is in charge of the environment, said: "Fly tipping is a serious crime for which a court can impose an unlimited fine and up to five years' imprisonment.

"It is important to remember that you are liable if your waste is not disposed of correctly, even if you do not actually dump it yourself.

"You therefore have a responsibility to ensure that anyone you pass your waste on to is authorised to dispose of it properly, otherwise you may be committing an offence.

"We continue to work closely with a number of agencies to clamp down on fly tipping and to encourage everyone to ensure that they dispose of their waste responsibly."

The road has been closed by police who reported the incident to Hertfordshire Highways, who said they will deal with the problem.

Kevin Carrol, Ringway divisional manager, working on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council, said: ‘A crew attended Summerhouse Lane, Aldenham this morning following reports of fly tipping blocking the road last night.

"Due to the size of the fly tip a grab lorry was required to clear it. The grab is expected to attend later today."
