A candlelit vigil was held in Kings Langley on Friday to mark the 100 year anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
Those who attended included a man, who brought along a spade from the trenches, and the great niece of Private Harold Toms, who died at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette and is remembered with honour at Thiepval Memorial.
A candlelit procession ended at the war memorial, where Councillor Bob McLean, Mayor of Dacorum, led the service and the Reverend David Lawson, of All Saints Church, gave a poignant and moving service of readings and prayers.
Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning, who represents the village, read the list of Kings Langley soldiers, who died at the Somme - one of the bloodiest battles in military history.
A total of £110 was raised for the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal and the parish council still has a number of small enamel pin Somme commemorative badges, which are available for a small donation from the council office in Vicarage Lane, which is open from 9.30am to 12.30pm weekdays.
