Now that summer has (finally) arrived, it’s important to remember that it’s not only people who suffer in the heat: our pets can also be at risk of heat stroke. So Petplan have created a handy list of tips and tricks to make sure your pet stays healthy and comfortable this summer.

1. Soothing spray – Dogs’ fur coats and lack of sweat glands mean that they overheat more quickly than humans. Spraying your pet’s fur with water will help them to retain a low body temperature.

2. Hot under the collar? – Try placing your dog’s collar in the freezer for a few minutes. When you secure it back around their neck, the leather and buckle will be nice and cool.

3. Self-replenishing water bowl – One of the most important things to remember is to keep your pet hydrated. Take a 2L plastic bottle with a lid and fill partially with water. Use two elastic bands to attach it upside down to a chair or table leg just above your pet’s bowl. When you unscrew the lid the water will fill the bowl, but as soon as the water reaches the lid it stops automatically. As your pet drinks, water will naturally fill the space left behind so that the bowl always remains full.

4. Catio furniture – Cats love napping outside in the sun, but on hot days it’s important that they don’t overdo it. If your cat has a favourite sun spot, try creating some shade during the hottest hours of the day by draping towels between two patio chairs.

5. Slush puppies – Often pets’ appetites will wane in the hot weather as they are less active and don’t use as much energy. Tempt their appetite by freezing their food with water in ice cube trays to make hydrating treats.

6. Know your pet’s heat risk – Each pet’s risk of overheating is unique. Owners of white cats and dogs, and those that have white ears, should be aware that they have a higher chance of burning and should therefore try to remain inside or in the shade.

7. Chill pads – Cats and dogs can manage their temperature through their feet pads. Create cold water bottles by inserting ice packs into pillow cases and setting them in the shade in your pet’s favourite spots.

8. N-ice kitty – Freeze a small water-filled balloon, then remove and discard the balloon for an ice ball toy your cat will love to play with.

9. Tenn-ice balls – Your dog’s tongue also helps to regulate their body temperature. Keeping tennis balls in the freezer ready for summer games of catch will help ensure that your dog won’t overheat while running around.
