Professional chess players will be competing in Watford’s first ever grandmaster.

One of the country’s leading professional chess players, Keith Arkell, 55, will be taking on 12 opponents at once on August 25.

The Happy Hour pub, in Eastbury Road, will be holding the free event sponsored by the English Chess Federation.

The display will start at 7pm and losing opponents will be replaced from a waiting queue.

Top players from Watford Chess Club have coached children in the conservatory of the Happy Hour pub for three years.

Angelina Bull, manager of The Happy Hour, said: “My regulars used to tell me that there was little for their children to do in Watford. I have always felt that pubs should contribute to local communities and I felt that a link-up with the local chess club might be of some help.”

The club now has 32 junior members, of which five have gone on to represent England in junior international events.
