A man was taken to hospital after falling from a bridge onto a disused railway.

Two fire engines from Watford and an ambulance were called at 12.06pm to Vicarage, Watford, after reports of a man injured on a disused train track.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, fell from a height but did not sustain many injuries according to the ambulance service.

Monika Czarnowska, 34, saw the man fall from the bridge onto the train track.

She said: "I was walking along the street with my children and I saw a hand on the bridge but I just thought it was not real.

"A woman pulled up in her car and started shouting for him. I thought she was looking for him.

"I then heard a loud bang and screams and shouts. He was very lucky not to be injured more.

"The fire engine was driving passed the area at the time of the accident and I was waving for them to stop."

She said the man was hanging on the bridge like he was hiding and when he saw his relative it was like he jumped.

A cyclist went down to see whether the boy was OK, according to Mrs Czarnowska, whilst she called for the ambulance.

The height he fell was roughly around 10 metres and Mrs Czarnowska said if the fire engine was not there at the time the young man probably would have died.

He was conscious and talking to the crew. The man complained of back pain. He was taken to Watford General Hospital.

Police closed the junction at Hagden Lane, Watford. They are currently investigating how he fell onto the tracks.
