A guide to community events going on in Bushey, Watford, Three Rivers and the Langleys.

BUSHEY

The King Stag in Bushey be hosting another vintage fair on August 27. Running from 10am there will be plenty of stalls selling vintage and craft items from homemade birthday cards to vintage jewellery. From 2pm there will be some live swing and jazz music as well as a BBQ and lager and ciders at the outdoor bar.

There will be a family day bottled beer festival on Monday, August 29 from 12.30m to 5.30pm at The Royal Oak, in Bushey. There will be family games including a bouncy castle and apple bobbing. 

From jewellery making and music concerts to fitness sessions and parties, Hertsmere is providing funding for all kinds of events for the 65s and over in support of Older People's Day on October 1 and Silver Sunday on October 2. Hertsmere Borough Council has grants of up to £300 available for community groups and voluntary organisations.

The Big Bushey Shoe Collection has already starting looking to collect children’s shows for a charity called Sal’s Shoes which distributes shoes around the world to those in the most desperate need. As part of Bushey Synagogue the collection will mostly take place on Mitzvah Day in November but they can take donations now. Email mitzvahday@busheyus.org for details of drop-off points.

There will be a beer festival held at The King Stag in Bushey from Friday August 26 to Monday August 29. There will be more than 20 locally sourced ales, plus craft lagers and ciders. At the outside bar there will be cocktails being served throughout the weekend with a barbeque and swing music in the garden. 

There will be a car boot sale on Sunday August 28 in Little Bushey Lane, Bushey. Sellers are able to set up from 8.30am and no pre-bookings in needed. Buyers are welcome from 10am to 2pm and costs £1 or early bird buyers are able to attend from 10am with a £2 charge.

The Toby Carvery, in Aldenham, and Keech Hospice Care are holding a family fun day on Monday August 29 between 11am and 3pm. All money raised at the event will go to the Keech Hospice Care which are the only children’s hospice care in the area.

There will be an acoustics night held at the Royal Oak in Bushey on Sunday August 28 from 7.30pm. This evening replaces the King William acoustics nights as the pub is now closed.

There will be a summer barbeque at the Royal Oak pub, in Bushey, on Monday August 29. There will also be a bouncy castle and fairground games. The event will run from 12.30pm to 5.30pm.

THREE RIVERS

Merchant Taylors’ School will be holding a series of runs for families to get involved in. Adults are invited to take part in a 10k run and children will run different lengths, dependent on their age. The event, on September 25, will raise money for the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Centre.The first run at Moor Park, will kick off at 11.45am.

Watford and Three Rivers Refugee Partnership are asking for donations the for their Harvest Stock-Up. They are asking people to donate items such as sugar, fruit juice, rice, cereal, clothes, shampoo, toiletries and coffee. Items should be handed in at the Watford Foodbank, in Imperial Way.

Croxley Green Village Hall is having an older person awareness and learning event. The session, on September 2, aims to reduce the vulnerability of residents to scams, burglaries and fires by providing samples of the support and advice available within the community. The event, that runs between 10am and 2pm, is free but tickets need to be collected from the Community Safety Team. For more information call 01923 776611.

The Croxley Green Home and Produce Show is returning for the 97th time. The event will include cakes, vegetables, flowers, handicrafts and photography. The show will be held on September 10 at Yorke Mead School, and starts at 2.30pm. For more information call John Jowers on 01923 774621.

THE LANGLEYS

Transition in Kings (TiK) Food Group will be holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 7. The meeting is to plan work and development at the farm and the monthly market in Kings Langley. It is also a forum for ideas, news and sharing skills. TiK is a charity that aims to encourage communities to rebuild local resilience and reduce CO2 emissions. The meeting will be held at 7.30pm at The Hub at Rectory Farm.

New litter bins are to replace the old bins in Abbots Langley as part of village clean up scheme. AIMs Abbots Improvements has worked with Abbots Langley Parish Council to install the new bins. The volunteer group are working hard to develop the village and make it a more pleasant place for those who live there. Denis Cook will be performing at The Unicorn on September 4 from 6pm. Denis will be playing a variety of music across the decades. He is the uncle of 90s DJ Fatboy Slim and has recently moved to Spain to gig but is returning for UK performances.

WATFORD

Peace Hospice Care is opening its historic building to the public next month as part of Heritage Open Days. On Saturday, September 10 visitors can learn about its origins as the Peace Memorial Hospital and the early days of the hospice. Tours will take place hourly, starting at 10.15am, and will last about 30 minutes. If you’re thinking about starting/expanding your business or looking to brush up your job hunting skills help is available through Hertfordshire County Council Libraries’ Economic Wellbeing programme. Business start-up and market research information, job seeking skills, volunteering opportunities and improving your English are just some of the things available through Watford library and other selected libraries around the county. The free online service provides the opportunity to chat one-to-one with experienced business advisors who can help with a wide range of questions around how to start a business and provide templates and support with writing key business documents such as business plans and cash flow forecasts. Advisors can also help those who’ve already started a business but need advice on things like best practice, marketing, sales, finance and much more. 

Partners in Support is a non profit organisation supporting adults with learning disabilities and autism across Hertfordshire. They are currently struggling to recruit part and full time support workers for a new service in Watford. Due to not being able to recruit this is delaying the move for a lady with a learning disability who really wants her own independence.
