Most rail firms will give you a refund for your ticket, as long as the delay lasted for more than 30 minutes.

The good news is, that those who experienced a delay of more than 30 minutes should be able to claim a refund for their tickets.

Can I claim a refund for my train ticket?

It depends on the train company. Many firms now use a scheme called ‘Delay Repay’ which promises a refund for tickets if the journey was delayed for more than 30 minutes, regardless of the reason.

Others use less generous schemes and the terms vary between companies.

The good news is both London Midland and Greater Anglia trains have Delay Repay schemes.

How much money do you get back?

Regardless of whether your train company uses Delay Repay you should get at least 50 per cent of your fare back.

If your delay is for more than 50 minutes and the train firm has Delay Repay then you’ll get your full fare back.

You should be paid by cheque, although some firms still offer vouchers.

London Midland pays refunds by cheque or vouchers. While Greater Anglia allows customers to exchange vouchers for cash at ticket offices, as long as you have your confirmation letter.

How do I claim for a refund on my train ticket?

You must make your claim within 28 days of the delay. Look up the train company running the service and find out how much you can get back.

Make a note of the delay and the reason for it. Keep hold of your tickets – you’ll need to send a copy of them if you’re applying online or by post.

You can then fill in a form online or request one from the station or by phone.

You can find out more information on the Greater Anglia and London Midland websites.
